Spiritual Development, the Recession and Psychotherapy

The demand for counselling or psychotherapy in order to clarify spirituality and explore spiritual development has had a marked increase in my practice since the start of the recession.

People who work in the City of London are at the coalface of this recession so could it be that they too are at the forefront of choosing to look within for different answers? It is the ‘looking within’ that creates the interface between spirituality and psychotherapy and as a thirst for deepening burgeons, the need to explore it and have a greater awareness of how to be with it increases.

In an era of fundamentalist capitalism, where the notion that we only get out what we put in has been lost, there is a disconnection from what is really important. As it can often be through crisis and challenge that people grow and transform maybe the recession is the prompt for us to search for something more to sustain and resuscitate dehydrated creativity and souls.

Connecting at a human level

When materialism is stripped away and the earthly structures crack open as they have now begun to, it can look like only a void is left. However if the void is viewed opportunistically, it can be seen as a gateway to something different, something better. This recession offers an opportunity for us to think more deeply about our lives and our values, how we perceive ourselves to be in the world and what we really want and need.

When we talk about the ‘markets’ in the City we mean the financial markets which are managed by the use of technology. Yet historically markets are the meeting place of people. In the financial markets, there is little human interaction but the human cost is enormous. People work inhuman hours with little concern or even awareness of how it affects them personally. The same can be said for all of the classic human endeavours in the City – financial, legal and media.

Perhaps the recession will give us the opportunity,. not only to connect with our spiritual selves but to review and re-assess how we are in the world and whether what we do in our daily lives sits well with our soul’s purpose.
